Navigation in shallow water and tight spaces with a tether-based non-acoustic positioning system

Several operations will be presented that showcase the unique capabilities of the Smart Tether. The applications focus on several where acoustic positioning is challenging, including under ice, in very shallow water of harbors and lakes, and in penetrations. A tether-based navigation system operates by directly measuring the shape of an underwater tether. The position of the submerged ROV or diver is determined by calculating the underwater position relative to the topside GPS or known coordinate, using the model of the tether shape. The system is used extensively in unexploded ordnance searches, where shallow water and the desire for no signature can make acoustic positioning systems undesirable. Tether-based positioning systems are also ideal for penetrations under ice, where deployment of acoustic beacons can be difficult or time consuming. Tether-based positioning is also gaining momentum for diver navigation applications. The presentation will include pictures and stories of dive operations employing tether-based navigation.
