ReefBot: Innovative Coral Reef Conservation Platform

Justine Kasznica, Program Director, ReefBot
http://www.reefbot.com

ReefBot is a Pittsburgh-based team of robotics engineers, aquarists and professionals that recently developed a unique children’s aquarium exhibit at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium. The exhibit features a custom version of the VideoRay Pro 4 ROV outfitted with HD camera and fish recognition software. It demonstrates robotic technology, and serves a dual role as (1) an interactive platform for educating the public about coral reef biodiversity and conservation, and (2) a platform for developing underwater robotic technology for use in field research and exploration. The presentation will explain the unique dual roles of CLEO as both an educational tool and a robotics research program. The presentation will also discuss the emerging role of ReefBot as an ocean and coral reef ambassador to a worldwide audience.
