VideoRay – A Nuclear Power Plant Inspection Tool

Charlie Foll, Managing Director, Atlantas Marine Ltd
http://www.atlantasmarine.com

The UK is embarking on a program of decommissioning 19 old nuclear power stations, which includes the clean-up of all radioactivity and progressive demolition of the plant. Part of the decommissioning process involves the inspection and safe removal of radioactive waste that has been stored under water for over thirty years. The diving environment is extremely harsh; it contains high levels of radiation which interfere with electronic circuitry, and high pH waters which are very corrosive.

James Fisher Nuclear (JFN) is a key ‘player’ in this specialised field of work. To keep costs to a minimum, their policy is to use ‘off the shelf’, commercially proven technology, and adapt this for their own requirements. JFN‘s ‘ROV of choice’ is the VideoRay Pro4. This presentation will discuss how the Pro4 has been used to inspect areas that have been unseen for years, the challenges they face, and new tools and techniques to sample and characterise the nuclear waste and storage ponds.

Despite the decommissioning process, the UK is committed to using nuclear power, and has plans to build 8 new sites. Our presentation will also cover how the VideoRay ROV is used at other power generating sites.
